He’s a country guy who’s swapped Sydney for Melbourne, and after just over a week in his new city, we asked for his verdict. His score? A solid “7.5 out of 10”, and honestly, it would’ve been higher if it weren’t for those cursed right-hook turns.
Three days into his new gig with Christian O’Connell, we figured it was the perfect time to get the lowdown from Sydney’s own Alex Cullen on how he’s settling into life in Melbourne.
His rating feels fair, any big city move comes with its challenges. And unsurprisingly, most of Cullen’s gripes are about Melbourne’s unique driving quirks. Read on for the run down:
NOT A FAN OF THE RIGHT-HOOK TURN
Christian brought up the infamous right-hook turn that’s native to Melbourne, a concept that has Cullen baffled. While Christian has managed to avoid them for seven years, Cullen has already tackled one head-on.
“There was one in the middle of the tram tracks, I was like am I supposed to be here?”
THE ROUNDABOUTS WITH PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS
Still on roads… Cullen also flagged Melbourne’s habit of sticking pedestrian crossings right at roundabouts. “Very unique to Melbourne,” he says.
BUT HE IS IMPRESSED BY MELBOURNE’S WATER PRESSURE
It’s not all bad news, Melbourne. We’ve got strong water pressure, and that counts for something.
“Great water pressure in Melbourne out of the taps,” says Cullen.
AND LOVES THE WIDE STREETS
And yes, we’re back on the roads again. Cullen’s a fan of Melbourne’s “lovely wide streets” – they remind him of driving on a country road.
