Hot on the heels of John Farnham: Finding The Voice, comes a new doco about the life of music trailblazer Michael Gudinski will feature at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
The world premiere of Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story will feature interviews with some of the global names he knew and worked with, including Kylie Minogue, Dave Grohl, Sting, Ed Sheeran, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel and Jimmy Barnes.
Gudinski died in March 2021 at his home in Melbourne at the age of 68.
He was a godfather figure in the Australian music scene, having founded Mushroom Records in May 1972, which went on to become the largest independent label in Australian music history.
Director Paul Goldman said the production team was excited and honoured to launch the film in the city, because Gudinski was a passionate Melburnian.
“His fierce love affair with all things Melbourne was legendary, one of the deeply important and personal things in his life,” Goldman said.
“Especially putting the Melbourne music scene and Australian artists on the map, both here and overseas.”
The film looks at how Gudinski made stars of so many musicians and shares behind the scenes stories from the music industry in a film that charts Australia’s musical back catalogue.
The festival’s opening night feature will be the Australian premiere of Noora Niasari’s film Shayda, following its Audience Award win at the Sundance festival.
The Melbourne International Film Festival returns from August 3-20, and will also screen in regional locations.
