Victoria will be hit by a cold front later today.

According to the Bureau Of Meteorology, damaging winds of up to 100km/hr will lash the central and western and central parts of the state.

Winds of up to 120km/hr and blizzards are expected to batter the Alpine peaks in eastern Victoria later tonight.

Locations which may be affected by these heavy winds include Mildura, Swan Hill, Horsham, Bendigo, Hamilton, Warrnambool, Portland, Kyneton, Ballarat, Mt Buller, Mt Hotham and Falls Creek.

Melbourne will escape the worst of it, but can expect showers and strong winds later tonight.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;
