More details are beginning to emerge after underworld figure Tony Mokbel was stabbed in prison yesterday.

The drug lord was transferred from Barwon Prison near Geelong to intensive at Royal Melbourne Hospital after being ambushed by two other inmates at 3:45pm on Monday.

Detectives are currently investigating the attack but the Herald Sun has started to reveal a number of details.

While the motive is still unclear, a source  stated the kingpin had “intervened in a standover racket operating at the prison…and disrupted an extortion scheme run by a group of Pacific Island inmates.”

He was also described as a “pest” for constantly talking about how he was planning to be freed from prison.
