Police powers to check identification at Australian airports have been beefed up under legislation that has passed the Senate.

The bill passed the upper house on Monday night, with Labor supporting the government’s plan to allow officers to carry out identity checks without cause.

Under the new powers, police will also be able to direct a person to leave an airport or not take a flight for up to 24 hours.

Minor party Centre Alliance secured support for amendments ensuring the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security will review the measures in three years.

But the changes to the bill will have to be approved in the House of Representatives where MPs will give it final approval.
