New cameras are being introduced in Melbourne to catch drivers who are using their phones while driving.

The high-tehc cameras can zoom in on drivers and see if they’re driving distracted.

They’ll also come with heavier fines and higher demerit point penalties as part of a road blitz.

“I think the entire Victorian community want to see tougher penalties,” Roads Minister Jaala Pulford said.

“What we need is for people to be genuinely afraid of being caught.”

Victoria’s $484 fine for using your mobile is the second-highest in the country behind South Australia.
