Victorians could be separating their rubbish into six or more bins to solve the state’s recycling crisis.

Infrastructure Victoria have proposed the idea to minimise contamination.

The bins would be separated into six waste streams: paper, glass, metal, plastic, organic material and “other” waste.

In 2018, China (who disposes nearly 75% of the state’s waste) stopped importing our waste because our recycling was too contaminated and its hoped this system will work to resolve this.

The report from Infrastructure Victoria also proposed using more recycled products, banning single-use plastic bags, and introducing waste-to-energy technologies.
