A man has died after his family home went up in flames in Cranbourne West on Saturday.

The 35-year-old was trying to save his home which he shared with his wife and three children, who escaped with no injury.

Emergency services were called to Hazelmere Avenue around 2.45am. The fire was under control half an hour later but crews were still at the scene for several hours.

The man was taken to The Alfred Hospital in a critical condition with lower body injuries but could not be saved.

It is believed the fire started in the garage and spread to the house. Authorities are not treating it as suspicious.

A fundraiser has been set up to assist the family during this time and has already received over $53,000 in donations.

“My sister Alana and her family had a tragic house fire. Her fiancè Chris passed away after trying to save their house. Alana is left with 3 young children- Indy 9, Willow 5 and Bay 4 years old. We are asking for you to share this or any donation to please help this beautiful young family during this horrific time. Many many thanks x,” the GoFund Me page reads.
