Clarendon Street has been shut down between Park and Bridport Street, South Melbourne due to a “major” gas leak.

VicEmergency issued a warning around midday about a “high pressure natural gas leak” after a digger hit a gas line.

An MFB spokeswoman urged the public to:

“Please avoid the area. It is anticipated that this will be a protracted incident,” she said.

Businesses have been evacuated and local residents warned to stay away.

Use Cecil Street or Moray Street instead if you are driving in the area.
