Port Phillip Council could close St Kilda promenade if beachgoers continue to disobey the state’s social distancing laws.

Wednesday was a weirdly warm Melbourne day and there were reports many people took to the stretch of foreshore between St Kilda and Middle Park.

However, it did not go unnoticed, with City Of Port Phillip Mayor Bernadene Voss saying if there was a breakout of Coronavirus in the area, they may enforce stricter lockdown measures.

She told The Age “Many people are too complacent about what it is we are experiencing and what we need to do,” Ms Voss said. “We really need to get through to people that these measures are in place because lives are at stake.”

“Just because we live near the beach doesn’t mean we’re immune to an outbreak here.

“Overall people are doing the right things but there are some people still too close together.”

The council had closed beaches on March 27 but the council reopened them to dog walkers and for people to take a dip in the water, however, people are continuing to sunbake.
