Victoria Police have threatened jail time to anyone who breaches quarantine rules, announcing that sentences could carry a maximum of 10 years behind bars.

Deputy Commission Shane Patton said, “if we have a person who deliberately breaches any isolation rule if they’re, say, COVID positive and they go into the community and place somebody at risk by actually doing that, we’re going to consider whether or not we should use Crimes Act offences.”

Crimes Act includes placing a person in danger of serious injury or in danger of death.

“These are serious indictable offences but we’re at a stage where we’re going to say we’re open to considering that but it will depend on the circumstances.

“Unless you’re living under a rock or you’re an idiot, you know the restrictions are there, the restrictions are to be abided by.”
