A Brett Whiteley painting has broken Aussie records overnight by selling for over $6 million.

The piece is called ‘Henri’s Armchair’ and the bidding started at $4.5 million at Menzies Art Auctions.

Within minutes and over three bidders the painting was sold at $5 million, pushed up to $6.136 million after auction house premiums added.

The old record was originally set at $5.4 million with Sidney Nolan’s famous painting of ‘Ned Kelly’.
