Technology has levelled up again with Hug, a new iOS app that allows users to send emojis that friends can “feel”.

The app allows you to select an emoji – be it happy, sad or “party” – and then hold your phone to your heart, recording a series of vibrations.

Then off you go sending it to your friend, who will, on holding the phone to their heart, be able to feel those vibrations and know that you’re giving them a hug, no matter how far away you might be.

Hug’s creators say that hugs can lead to a boost of oxytocin and make you feel happier and experience positive physiological reactions.

While we’re not sure if a series of vibrations is a real substitute for an in-the-flesh embrace, it’s certainly a nice thought.

The app is available for download for iOS devices.
