A spike in abandoned cats has forced RSPCA South Australia to take action by launching its first free adoption drive to combat the rise in abandoned animals at shelters.

All cats over the age of six months can be adopted for free, while kittens are available for $99.

Head of Animal Operations Tim Charles says the organisation isn’t coping with the nearly 500 cats in its care across South Australian shelters.

The SA branch hopes to re-home as many animals in its care by the end of the month.

It’s important to note that no matter how many animals RSPCA look after, they will never euthanise a healthy pet.

The “end-of-furnancial” year promotion runs until the end of June.
