Rebel Wilson says claims she lied about her name and age are just “tall poppy syndrome”.
Australian website MummaMia claimed the Australian actress is 36, not 29 and her real name is Melanie Elisabeth Bownds.
Now Wilson has addressed the rumours in a series of funny posts on Twitter claiming the story is just aimed at cutting her down.
“OMG I’m actually a 100 year old mermaid formerly known as “CC Chalice” ….thanks shady Australian press for your tall poppy syndrome x. Okay but all jokes aside now…my real name is Fat Patricia x.”
MummaMia Editor Mia Freedman said the website considered publishing a story “for quite some time”.
“We kind of let it go because we didn’t want to be seen to be attacking her. What changed is some comments that she started making recently that have been very negative towards women that are her age or older. Just very subtle barbs,” Freedman said.
Freedman claims to have been offended when Wilson said she was rejected for the all-female cast of Ghostbusters because the filmmakers had decided on an “older group” including 35-year-old Rose Byrne and 41-year-old Kristen Wiig.
It’s not the first time the claims have been aired.
A similar article appeared in Women’s Day and back in 2011 the Herald Sun claimed Wilson’s age was probably 28 (making her 32 today).
At that time Wilson was quoted as saying: “That’s wrong, and as my mum says, ‘You’re a lady, don’t say your age’.”
Wilson’s latest film Pitch Perfect 2 was the highest grossing film at the US box office on the weekend. No matter how old she is, that’s a huge achievement.
