Hot on the heels of the hugely successful Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, it looks as though Prince will also get the full Hollywood treatment.
Universal Pictures has snagged the rights to a stack of Prince songs with the explicit intention of making a movie, Yahoo! reports.
Unlike the Freddie Mercury biopic, this one will involve an original story with Prince songs driving it. In other words, it’ll be fictional.
Apparently, producers reckoned that Prince’s 1984 flick Purple Rain had “largely covered” the biographical side of things and they wanted to do something “out of the box”.
(TBH, it sounds kinda like what they did with Mamma Mia!)
Bohemian Rhapsody Breaks Records
Bohemian Rhapsody has already taken more than $540 million in box-office worldwide, which makes it the highest-grossing biopic of all time. It took $55 million to make.
Other music-based biopics in the pipeline include:
– The Motley Crue biopic, The Dirt, is to be released on March 22, 2019.
– The Elton John story, Rocketman, on May 17.
– Universal is also working on Last Christmas, which features the music of George Michael, but no release info is available at this time.
– Film adaptations of Les Miserables and Cats are also on the cards.
