Midnight Oil will release their first new music in 18 years this week.

The new song will premiere on Friday and will be called Gadigal Land, which will be performed at the  virtual National Indigenous Music Awards on Saturday.

In a statement to announce the music, the band revealed they had recorded 20 songs late last year, with seven songs themed around reconciliation to be released in October as The Makarrata Project mini-album. We’ve always been happy to lend our voice to those who call for racial justice, but it really feels like we’ve reached a tipping point,” the band said in the statement.

“We urge the federal government to heed the messages in the Uluru Statement From The Heart and act accordingly.

“Hopefully this song and The Makarrata Project mini-album we’ve created alongside our First Nations friends can help shine a night more light on the urgent need for genuine reconciliation in this country and in many other places too.”
