Mariah Carey is no stranger to on-stage mishaps. The latest bungle, saw the star unable to hear her own song track during her New Years Eve performance, leaving her unable to sing.
The star attempted to go through the motions on stage, moving from dancer to dancer as her vocal track continued on in the background without her.
“We can’t hear, but I’ll just go through the motions,” she told the crowd.
“I’m trying to be a good sport here,” she continued.
Her performance sent social media into a spin. One fan tweeted: “ISIS just took responsibility for Mariah Carey’s performance.”
Another said: “the amount of sh*t hitting the fan right now behind the scenes of that #MariahCarey lip synch debacle.’’
A spokesperson for Carey blamed the bungled performance on technical difficulties.
“Unfortunately there was nothing she could do to continue with the performance given the circumstances,” she said.
Mariah responded to the backlash online the next day, simply tweeting: “Sh*t happens. Have a happy and healthy new year everybody! Here’s to making more headlines in 2017.”
According to sources the singer is fuming and believes her performance was sabotaged. TMZ reported Mariah notified production at least an hour before stepping on stage that her earpieces weren’t working.
The issue was raised after Mariah was reportedly unable to hear questions from Ryan Seacrest earlier in the night. TMZ said the star was informed her earpiece would be on another frequency when she performed.
According to Carey’s team there were just too many ‘coincidences’ that night. A prompter which runs the song lyrics and on stage cues was also down and sources say Mariah believes the production company sabotaged her performance in order to profit from the drama.
The production company is yet to respond to the allegations.
