Kevin Hines attempted to commit suicide by jumping off the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge in 2000, after hearing voices. At the time, at age 21, he was suffering bipolar disorder and psychosis. Kevin survived the impossible, extremely injured, however it is what happened after his 4 second drop which is truly a miracle.
However, he revealed that when he was speaking at a suicide prevention conference a man approached him and explained that actually a sea lion kept him afloat until the coast guard arrived.
“Kevin, I’m so very glad you’re alive, I was less than two feet away from you when you jumped”, the man said.
“It has haunted me until this day; it was no shark, it was a sea lion and the people above looking down believed it to be keeping you afloat until the coast guard brought a ride behind you.”
Kevin used to not talk about his experience as he felt “embarrassed”, however after giving 120 students a life-affirming talk, many of whom had suicidal thoughts, he realised the power of his story. Now he has written a book and appears at conferences all over the world.
‘The message is very very simple,’ he told ABC. ‘You don’t have to die this way.’
If it weren’t for that sea lion, Kevin wouldn’t be here today to spread his inspiring and life-changing story.
