The first trailer for Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, the first fully-authorized documentary about the late Nirvana frontman, has been released.

The trailer opens up with an eerie instrumental of Nirvana’s “All Apologies” before transitioning into a string version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

The footage in the trailer includes clips of interviews with Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and of home videos featuring Cobain and his wife, Courtney Love.

Montage of Heck was directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Brett Morgen. Cobain’s daughter, Francis Bean Cobain, is an executive producer on the film.

“Above all else, Frances and I wanted the film to be honest,” Morgen tells Yahoo. “We did not want to perpetuate any myths or romanticize his drug use, so the film takes a rather unflinching approach to some dark times.”

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck will air May 4 on HBO in the US.
