If you thought the inventor of the Heimlich maneuver could boast of saving hundreds of lives performing his namesake routine, you’d be wrong.

In fact the now 96-year-old had never performed the heimlich maneuver on a real person in an emergency situation until Monday just past in his retirement home.

He first described the technique in 1974… so it took 42 years before he actually needed to use it himself.

Mind blown!

Henry Heimlich was sitting down to eat in his retirement community when he noticed the woman beside him, Patty Ris, was choking.

He didn’t hesitate and managed to dislodge the piece of hamburger meat with ease and save the 87-year-old woman.

Heimlich had spent most of his career teaching the maneuver and demonstrating it… but this is the first time he needed it in real life.

“The whole thing was very moving to me,” he told the Associated Press.

“I never thought that I would be saving someone’s life by doing the Heimlich maneuver.”

How incredible!
