Bosses at BBC Radio 1 have denied they banned Madonna from the airwaves due to her age.

A report which surfaced over the weekend suggested the 56-year-old hitmaker’s music has been left off the Radio 1 playlist as she does not appeal to the station’s young listeners.

However, BBC bosses have now insisted Madonna, 56, has not been blacklisted and cite 72-year-old Sir Paul McCartney as an example of an older artist who still has records played on the corporation’s flagship station.

The statement reads,

“Radio 1 does not ban anyone… The tracks played on Radio 1 are chosen on musical merit and their relevance to our young audience on a case-by-case basis, and whilst around 40 per cent of the country’s 15 to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist’s age is never a factor.

In fact, Paul McCartney currently has two tracks – FourFiveSeconds and Only One – on the Radio 1 playlist.”
