Telstra officially has the fastest mobile data network in Australia but it’s only just beating the newly rejuvenated Vodafone..

It’s according to a new report by wireless mapping company OpenSignal, which compared the performance of the three largest telcos based on 15 million samples from 7904 users.

The results show Telstra leading the pack for 4G speeds, with average downloads of 23MB/S, as well as overall average speeds being 17.1MB/S across it’s 3G and 4G networks.

Optus and Vodafone were tied on their 4G speeds, average 19MB/S during the test period from February 1 to April 30.

The one big surprise is that is now more likely for Vodafone customers to get a 4G reception than Optus, with 77 per cent of Vodafone customers easily accessing the service, whereas only 73% of Optus customers can access easily.

It’s great news for Vodafone, who were branded Vodafail just four years ago when their 3G network collapsed.
