Council FURIOUS Over Melbourne's New Mega-Store

Looks like the arrival of German supermarket giant Kaufland has ruffled a few feathers.

The mega-store chain recently announced a massive $459 million investment to build the distribution centre in Mickleham plus stores in Epping, Dandenong and Chirnside Park.

But while the move has been met with almost universal applause as a way to break up the Coles/Woolies duopoly, Whittlesea Council isn't happy.

“Kaufland will take up a large portion of the Epping Central Structure Plan, which had been identified for mixed use including commercial and residential,” Whittlesea Council planning director Liana Thompson said.

“It also prevents a better footpath connection between the Epping rail station and Epping Central.”

Kaufman said they will sell heavily discounted local, well-known and private brands as well as set up a bakery, butchery and independent cafes.

Ms Thompson said a submission by the council raising these concerns was largely ignored.

There haven't been any concrete dates set for construction to begin but it's believed the distribution centre will break ground in May or June.
