Victorian Motorists Set To Pay For The West Gate Tunnel
Victorian motorists will pay for the $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel either through taxes or tolls until 2045.
The Andrews Labor government announced on Tuesday it had signed the contracts for work to start on the road project within weeks.
The toll road's cost has ballooned by $1.2 billion from an original $5.5 billion because of its extra length.
Toll company Transurban will pay for two-thirds of the project and will be compensated by a 10-year toll extension on the West Gate Tunnel and CityLink until 2045.
But the government is not saying how much that deal would reap Transurban and if the deed does not pass parliament, it says the state will fork out the funds to finish the road.
