Twenty Prisoners Are Still Missing Following Melbourne Riots
Tensions have remained high at Parkville Youth Justice Centre with reports that fires have been lit and 20 teen inmates are missing.
It follows a second consecutive night of riots.
Police, ambulance and fire crews have been on standby at the youth prison overnight.
Sources have told the Herald Sun that 12 young offenders have barricaded themselves in a unit that police arrived at this morning.
Department of Health and Human Services spokesman David Stockman said all young people were contained in the centre.
“Youth justice staff and Victoria Police are working to resolve an incident at the Parkville Youth Justice Centre,” Mr Stockman said.
“The perimeter is secure and there is no threat to the community.
“The behaviour of these clients is unacceptable and staff shouldn’t have to tolerate it.”
It is estimated at least $1 million in damage has been caused.
