Sharapova fails drug test at Aussie Open
Maria Sharapova has announced she failed a drugs test at the Australian Open.
It's an unfortunate set of circumstances for the five time Grand Slam winner who had been taking the drug for illness - for over ten years.
Up until January 1st this year, the drug, for issues with magnesium and diabetes wasn't banned. She has said that she didn't know that the drug had been banned.
"I failed the test and take full responsibility for that," said Sharapova.
"I had been taking this medicine for the past 10 years, but on 1 January this became a prohibited substance which I did not know."
"I made a huge mistake," she said.
"I know I face consequences and I didn't want to end my career this way. I hope I will be given the chance to play this game again."
More to come.
