Security Scare At Government House In Melbourne
A man armed with a box cutter knife has been caught in the grounds of Victoria's Government House.
Security found the man, who was allegedly carrying the retractable knife, about 3am on Tuesday, with police called to Governor Linda Dessau's official residence next to Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens.
A 40-year-old Capel Sound man was charged with trespass and will face Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 31.
Victoria's first female governor was reportedly home with her barrister husband Anthony Howard at the time of the incident.
The couple hosted an event at the historic premises on Monday night, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research.
The overnight security scare marks the second incident at Government House in less than 12 months after an unarmed, shirtless man climbed onto the roof.
The governor was overseas for the May incident, on an official visit to Singapore and Indonesia.
Government House officials have been contacted for comment.
