Safe Injecting Room Trial Has Been Approved In Melbourne
A safe heroin injecting room is set to be trialled in Melbourne after being approved by the Andrews government.
This state-sanctioned injecting room, set to go ahead in the inner-city neighbourhood of Richmond, comes as too many lives have been lost in the past few years due to heroin overdoses.
The trial period is set to run for two years before being reviewed. It would be the second safe injecting room to exist in Australia but the first of it's kind in Victoria.
This surprising approval comes after many years of opposition to the medical supervision of illegal substance injections by Premier Daniel Andrews. But an increase in heroin overdoses in 2017 alone has forced the government to reconsider this stance.
