Melbourne Preschool Seriously Damaged By Huge Fire
Firefighters are currently battling a large blaze at Heidelberg Preschool in Orient Place, in Melbourne's northeast.
The fire allegedly started when a car caught fire at around 5:12am and the flames spread to the building.
"The fire was initially reported as a car up against the kindergarten and impinging on it, however by the time the brigade arrived it had taken hold on the building, spreading quickly through the roof," an MFB statement said.
Over 30 firefighters were called to battle the blaze and it is believed that they have now contained the fire.
"Forced entry was made into the preschool and a large extent of the ceiling was removed to make access to the fire as it was spreading through the ceiling," the MFB statement continued.
The kindergarten building has been left severely damaged and parents are being told to keep their kids home today.
Residents in the surrounding area are also being advised to keep their windows and doors closed.
Yarra Street near the preschool has been shut down and people are being told to avoid the area if possible.
Victoria Police have now opened an investigation into the fire.
