Melbourne Announces Upgrade But One Crucial Is Missing

The state government of Victoria this morning announced a project to transform our tram network that will take place as part of the Metro Tunnel project.

The Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, announced that works at Domain would begin shortly, with a worksite to be established in the southern corner of the Shrine Reserve early next month.

It's also been said that the site would not affect the road or tram network, and work will initially focus on relocating gas, water and other services.

Later in the timeline, next year, works will ramp up involving large construction sites being set up on St Kilda Road and Domain Road to build the new Domain station, however no details of dates or timing has been confirmed, apart from saying that the works would be complete next year.

There will be changes to tram routes 6, 8 and 55. A new route, combining the 8 and 55 will commence when works are completed.

“Route 58 will start next year as part of the transformation this massive project will deliver to our tram network, while it builds a new tunnel to run more trains in and out of the city from the suburbs and regions.”

Route 6 will be extended to replace Route 8 services.
