Let's Get Loud! The Changes Coming To Melbourne's Trams
Your tram ride's about to get a whole lot noisier.
In an effort to fight congestion Yarra Trams have announced they'll be arming their staff with speakers and microphones.
The pocket-sized amps will be given to customer service workers so they can make announcements about services and direct traffic for the hordes of commuters at peak hour.
The system was given a whirl during the Australian Open and was deemed a success.
It will also start using QR codes on trams and at stops so travellers can get live updates on their smartphones.
The operator has also introduced QR codes to trams and stops for passengers with smartphones to receive digital updates.
The changes come just in time for the Formula One Grand Prix (March 14-17) at Albert Park where an expected 300,000 people are anticipated to attend.
