Large Factory Fire On Somerville Road In West Footscray

6:30AM More than 80 MFB firefighters are currently battling an out of control blaze at a factory on Somerville Road in West Footscray.

Crews were called to the scene just after 5am this morning and arrived just six minutes after dispatch to find a large 100m x 200m factory was fully alight.

At the moment more than 20 firefighting appliances are on scene, including aerial appliances which are attacking the blaze externally and from above.

The fire is currently at a 6th alarm level, and crews are working hard to bring the blaze under control.

There is a large amount of toxic smoke which may impact the area within a 2km radius of Somerville Road. A community advice warning has been issued for the following suburbs: Brooklyn, Kingsville, Tottenham, West Footscray, Altona North, Braybrook, Footscray, South Kingsville, Spotswood, Sunshine, and Yarraville.

If you are sensitive to smoke or you live with someone who is sensitive to smoke you should close windows and doors. Turn off heating and cooling systems.

MFB is urging community members to avoid the area, and keep the roads clear so that emergency services can respond.

Somerville Road and Paramount Road are currently closed in both directions.

At this stage the cause of the blaze is not yet known.

Victoria police and Ambulance Victoria are currently on scene.
