Contract Worker Walks Away After Almost Being Buried Alive

A young worker is lucky to be alive after he became trapped five metres underground in Melbourne's north-west yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Lincoln Street in Essendon at around 2:30pm after reports that a trench had collapsed.

Dozens of firefighters and police worked to retrieve the man who had become covered up to his neck in dirt.

The contract worker had been fixing a sewerage system underground when an internal wall of the trench fell down on him.

He was finally rescued from the trench at around 4pm covered in mud, however, he appeared to be uninjured.

"He was in good spirits, very happy...he was more concerned about us cutting his boots off," said Commander Guy Mccrorie from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

The man was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital for mandatory checks and the incident is now being looked into by WorkSafe.
