A Melbourne playboy who was arrested as part of the investigation into a series of smash-and-grab jewllery store robberings has been charged by police.
31-year-old Alex Mendieta was arrested yesterday as his gold and diamond dealing store on Collins St was raided by detectives of the Gangs Crime Squad.
He was then charged with handling stolen goods, recklessly possessing stolen goods and the possession of stolen goods.
Two other colombian nationals aged 31 and 36 were also arrested. All three men are expected to face court later today.
Warrants were released across Melbourne around 10am on Thursday for the jewellery store and residential addresses in the CBD, Southbank and Caulfield North. A Lamborghini was among the items seized by police.
Mendieta owns the stores called Sell Your Gold Pty Ltd and Diamond On Sale Pty Ltd.
Thirty three jewellery stores were robbed by armed thugs in the past year and police believe that Mendieta received the stolen goods.
