WA Prince Says He's Exempt From Millions In Tax, ATO Says No

The monarch of a micro-nation land-locked by Western Australia says he is exempt from paying taxes, despite the Australian Tax Office claiming he owes $2.65 million, it has been reported.

In a writ filed in the WA Supreme Court, it’s alleged that Leonard George Casley, who refers to himself as His Royal Highness Prince Leonard of The Hutt River Province, hasn’t paid income tax for eight financial years, according to The West Australian.

The Prince, 91, argues that he has letters from the ATO stating he and his late wife Shirley were deemed non-residents of Australia for tax purposes in 2005.

“We’ve got assessments from the Australian Taxation Office saying they’re non-residents of the Commonwealth and there’s no tax to pay… the Australian tax department clearly recognises that fact. That is a diplomatic recognition,” he told The West.

The nation, located in WA’s Mid West, “seceded” from WA in 1970 and has its own currency, stamps and visa requirements.
