A Melbourne Council Has Dropped Australia Day References

Melbourne's City of Yarra Council have made some big changes.

Members voted to stop refferrin to January 26 as Australia Day, and also to stop hosting an annual citizenship ceremony on the day.

Instead, they will hold an Indigenous-themed event "marking the loss of Indigenous culture".

Even though the Mayor's office has been flooded with calls opposing the changes, they were passed yesterday.

Last year the council in Fremantle, Western Australia, officially changed all Australia Day celebrations to January 20.

The move by the City of Yarra has outraged many residents who believe the change is not a fair reflection of all local residents.
