8-Year-Old Girl 'Traumatised' After Melbourne Home Invasion
An eight-year-old girl has witnessed a gang of up to six youths attack her father with his own golf club before stealing his Mercedes in what police believe is a targeted home invasion in Melbourne's west.
The attackers broke into the Fabian Court home in Maribyrnong at around 3:45am yesterday via the rear of the property. A 50-year-old man confronted the gang before being stuck with one of his golf clubs. They then escaped in his white Mercedes Benz station wagon.
The man was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital suffering a head injury.
"The information we have is that the daughter and the wife observed what occurred and that may have been as a result of the commotion [they'd heard happening] downstairs," Detective Sergeant Anderson said.
According to police, the attackers are believed to be of African appearance and aged between 16 and 22.
"Our investigation indicates it is probably a targeted incident," Anderson said. "It doesn't appear to be a random matter, it would appear that address has been targeted for a reason.
"At this stage we don't know who the offenders are for sure. We have got some people who we are loosely looking at, but there's nothing to suggest they're definitely involved."
However, there is no evidence to suggest it was linked to organised crime.
Local residents have confirmed that the whole incident lasted around three or four minutes and involved at least six boys.
Any witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dash-cam footage of the incident are urged to contact police.
