AFL Staging Spotlight Falls On Dangerfield

Patrick Dangerfield is the latest AFL star under the spotlight for staging - a topic that has Richmond coach Damien Hardwick fuming.

The Geelong star will come under video review for a third-quarter incident during Sunday's tight loss to the Tigers at the MCG.

Dangerfield went to ground after Richmond star Dustin Martin made contact to his back and was paid a free kick.

The incident generated plenty of social media commentary.

Earlier this month, Tigers star Alex Rance was fined $1000 for staging.

On Friday night, Sydney key forward Lance Franklin also came under scrutiny when he won a free kick against West Coast captain Shannon Hurn.

But match reviewer Michael Christian deemed the incident did not warrant any sanction.

Asked about Rance after Sunday's 12.11 (83) to 9.11 (65) win, Hardwick took aim at media commentary.

"It's farcical ... I've over-exaggerated for a free kick, absolutely, and every player within the AFL system has done the same," Hardwick said.

"Unfortunately, they seem to pick on my bloke.

"It's what we do - champions, Buddy Franklin ... all of a sudden the media are all over him.

"Just let the guys play, pull your heads in a bit, I reckon - talk about the game, stop looking for the sensational headlines, it is just ridiculous."

Also, after Sunday's game, The Age reported that Martin appeared to make intentional contact with an umpire, apparently as he tried to explain a free that he conceded.

Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin also caught Geelong Joel Selwood high with a clumsy attempt at a spoil.

But Selwood was back on his feet immediately and he took full toll of the 50m penalty that Vlastuin conceded, kicking a booming goal.

Rance could come under scrutiny for an incident that was shown on the AFL's official Twitter feed.

As he tackled Dangerfield from behind, Rance appeared to make contact low on the Geelong star's midriff.
