It was on this day in 1968 that Martin Luther King was shot dead in Memphis Tennessee. Riots broke out in 30 American cities, leaving 39 dead – James Brown went on TV to appeal for calm.

Bill Gates founded Microsoft in 1975.

Aussie actor Heath Ledger was born in 1979. The star tragically died of an overdose in 2008.

And in 2009 Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr performed together for the first time in 16 years in the U.S. at New York's Radio City Music Hall. They were the headliners at Change Begins Within, a concert to benefit the David Lynch Foundation.
