Olivia Newton John Opens Up To Karl Stefanovic On 60 Minutes

Karl Stefanovic has spoken of the incredible calmness that surrounds Aussie superstar Olivia Newton-John as she faces cancer head-on for the second time.

Twenty-five years after she beat breast cancer, the 68-year-old spoke with Stefanovic in an interview for 60 Minutes.

“She is incredibly strong, but I was blown away by just how calm she is,” Stefanovic says.

“She’s always been a very calm woman but her presence, her spirit and quiet determination in getting through all of this is incredible."

“She’s a peaceful lady and she’s very spiritual and I think that’s all helping her.”

Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and underwent a partial mastectomy, chemotherapy and breast reconstruction.

“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t scary,” she says.

“But I intend to be healthy.”

At one point during their catch-up Olivia and Karl sat meditating on a hill at the Gaia health and wellness retreat she helped create, where she revealed:

“I need to get through this. I have lots to do,”

Karl asked: “How is it not breaking you?”.

She replied: “It’s not my job to be broken”.

“She said there are other people out there who have cancer and who have it worse than her, and she will not bow down to this,” Stefanovic says.

“She wants to let those people know they are not alone and that it is not breaking her.”

“I’ve no doubt she’ll beat this and continue to be an inspiration to others.”

“We were meditating on the hill there, and she grabs my hand and there’s this great, moment where you see that glint in her eye.

“And that’s what makes me see that the magic of Olivia Newton-John is going to continue."

“It’s that, and that smile. She’s a light. She lights up a room, she lights up the world."

“It will be no surprise to me that she beats this and gets on with it. And even though she’s a public person she will do it in her own quiet way.”
