UK's Best-Selling Album - Queen's Greatest Hits
Queen are the champions when it comes to having the best-selling album of all time in their U.K. homeland. In honor of the 60th anniversary of the debut of the country's Official Albums Chart, the tally's website has published a list of the 60 top-selling U.K. albums, and Queen's 1981 Greatest Hits compilation has landed firmly in first place, with 6.1 million copies sold.
Other albums by rock artists that landed near the top of the list include The Beatles' 1967 classic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band at #3, Oasis' 1995 record What's the Story Morning Glory? at #5, Pink Floyd's enduring 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon at #7, and Dire Straits' 1985 release Brothers in Arms at #8. Rounding out the top 10 is another Queen best-of, 1991's Greatest Hits II.
With regard to Queen's chart-topping milestone, guitarist Brian May said, "What a great bit of news to wake up to!...The most popular album? Well, I always thought the band showed promise, but this is beyond our boyhood dreams! Thanks folks!"
Added drummer Roger Taylor, "Incredible... marvellous... humbling... thank you... I feel good!"
Notable albums that appear a bit further down on the tally include Fleetwood Mac's Rumours at #11, Bob Marley & The Wailers' Legend at #16, The Verve's Urban Hymns at #18, Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell at #19, and The Beatles' hits compilation 1 at #20.
