The Who in Hyde Park Concert Film Screenings this month
Tonight, in hundreds of theaters across the U.S., The Who's latest concert film, The Who in Hyde Park, will be screened at 7:30 p.m. local time. The movie features footage of the British rock legends' June 26, 2015, performance at London's Hyde Park, which was the band's next-to-last U.K. show on its The Who Hits 50! Tour.
The Who in Hyde Park features the band performing 19 songs, including classics like "Who Are You," "My Generation," "Behind Blue Eyes," "Pinball Wizard," "Baba O'Riley," "You Better You Bet" and "Won't Get Fooled Again." In addition, the film includes interviews with Who guitarist Pete Townshend and singer Roger Daltrey, as well as with Robert Plant, Iggy Pop, ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and other well-known musicians. The screenings also will offer a special feature focusing on London landmarks that played a significant role in The Who's early history.
In an interview clip from the film, Daltrey talks about the excitement of playing in front of a massive crowd like the one that turned out for the Hyde Park concert.
"It is an extraordinary feeling when you go out there at first," he points out. "Everybody's pleased to see you and everybody's smiling, and you play the first song and the animation starts and you can see little pockets jumping about and the arms going up and down. All I can say is it becomes like a revolving door of energy. It makes you give out more and the more you give out, the more the arms go up and down."
Meanwhile, in an interview segment with Townshend, the guitar great compares the Hyde Park gig to "a little Glastonbury" festival, while noting how many new fans he saw in the audience.
"Apart from a few familiar faces down the very, very front, complete newcomers," he says. "So for us, what we are clearly doing is we're kind of filling in the blanks."
The Who in Hyde Park will screen at Village Cinemas across Australia October 21 and October 25. Details at villagecinemas.com.au
