Stevie Nicks On Girls and Boys in Bands

Stevie knows what can happen when band mates “go together” and she knows it doesn’t always end well. She and Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham used to date, and bassist John McVie and keyboardist Christine McVie were married and then divorced. But all that relationship turmoil served as musical inspiration for the band and was famously documented in their 1977 album Rumours. Stevie says the experiences have shaped their songs to this day.

In an interview with U.K's MOJO Magazine she says: “It was totally important and everybody is still writing about everybody else,” she says of the band’s past relationships. “It will never stop. Once you have that, even long after the couples are broken up, you still have that  when you sit down to write a couple of songs, that news from 100 years ago still creeps in.”

If Stevie Nicks had her way, every band would have a girl in it. She says mixing genders, like in Fleetwood Mac, makes for a more interesting dynamic.

“I think every band should have a girl in it, because it’s always going to make for cooler stuff going on then if it’s just a bunch of guys,” she says.  “It’s ultimately more romantic, no matter what. Even if nobody is going together, it still casts a romantic spell.”
