New Authorized Hendrix Biopic
Last year, an independent Jimi Hendrix biopic titled Jimi: All Is by My Side starring Outkast's Andre Benjamin premiered in U.S. theatres, but now comes word that a big-budget movie about the late guitar legend sanctioned by his family is moving forward.
Deadline Hollywood reports that Legendary Pictures has reached a deal with Experience Hendrix, the family company that oversees the rock icon's legacy, to make the film.
Screenwriter Scott Silver, whose credits include 8 Mile and The Fighter, has been chosen to pen the script, while Legendary is negotiating with the Oscar-nominated Paul Greengrass to direct. Greengrass' previous films include Captain Phillips, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.
Unlike All Is by My Side, which was made without the cooperation of Experience Hendrix, the new Hendrix flick will have access to the innovative guitarist's entire catalog of original recordings.
According to Deadline, Legendary executive Thomas Tull and Greengrass had begun putting together a Hendrix film about four years ago, but Experience Hendrix declined to cooperate with the project at the time. Tull and Greengrass then decided to shelve their plans rather than make an unauthorized movie.
No word yet who might portray Hendrix in the upcoming film, which will be produced by Tull, Jimi's stepsister and Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix and others.
