John Paul Young hates his name
Seventies pop idol John Paul Young despises his stage name.
The Love Is In The Air hitmaker, who is appearing on Dancing With The Stars, said he was forced to alter his name to distinguish himself from sixties Aussie popstar Johnny Young.
However, the addition of `Paul' later created confusion with UK singer Paul Young who had a number of hits, including Love Of The Common People and Wherever I Lay My Hat, in the eighties.
Yet John Paul Young, or JPY as he has become known, would have preferred to have just been John Young.
"It was the record company, Alberts, they were a bit nervous about Johnny Young because he was still around, so they enforced it on me," Young has told AAP.
"I've never really liked it. It's just something I've got and I'm stuck with ... some people started calling me Paul Young, so sorry Paul.
"The only good thing is I probably had one of the first acronyms in pop music."
Even though he hates his name, he has only passion and love for his 1977 hit Love Is In The Air which has had a couple of incarnations.
It reached the top 10 in the UK, Australia and the US the first time around and then it became synonymous with the soundtrack for the 1992 Australian film Strictly Ballroom which is now a major stage production and the show's big number.
That song alone has prevented JPY from ever becoming a washed-up seventies pop idol and has allowed him to carve out a comfortable living as a singer.
"It's everything thing to me. It allows me to live the life I live which is a wonderful thing and I can afford to say no to people every now and again because of that song," he said.
"With the little bit of royalties here and there, it keeps me alive which is great."
Many people have seen JPY sing Love Is In The Air and even danced to it and, possibly for the first time, he will shake his booty to the tune on the Seven network reality show.
"Put your money on it. It's not my idea but I have to go through with it," JPY said.
