Netflix Cinemas Might Be Coming To Screen Their Own Films
Netflix have taken over our little screens, having reshaped the television landscape by allowing us to watch our favourite shows and movies on demand on our TVs, mobile phones and tablets.
And now it seems that the streaming service is coming to take over the big screen too!
The L.A times is reporting that the company is looking at buying cinemas in New York and Los Angeles in order to boost their Netflix original films and increase their chances at winning awards for them.
It’s believed that Netflix have decided to make the controversial move to purchase their own cinemas because their content has been locked out of major theatre chains in the past and they will no longer be playing their films at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
Netflix struggled to get their content into theatres due to their insistence is having films released on their streaming platform on the same day as their theatrical release. They’re also in a feud with the Cannes Film Festival over a rule that all films played must be eligible in France.
Owning their own theatrical outlet would give the streaming service a greater chance at being noticed come awards season and would also hopefully help them attract filmmakers who want to see their work on the big screen.
But apparently it’s had somewhat of the opposite affect with many big names in the industry coming forward to say that they thought the films shown in Netflix only cinemas shouldn’t be allowed to qualify for major awards.
Stephen Spielberg recently said that he didn’t “believe that films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theatres for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award Nomination.”
Now of course if the streaming service does decide to open up their own cinemas, it brings into question, would people actually go out of their way to head to the theatre to watch a film that they could watch on the same day, at the time of their choosing, from the comfort of their own bed?
If we had the choice, you’d definitely have to entice us with some piping hot, buttery, movie popcorn to get us to change out of our PJs and watch their films on the big screen!
