My Generation – 30 Years Of True Blue Madonna
This weekend on My Generation with Jonesy and Amanda it’s a double celebration for Madonna. She turns 58 on Tuesday and it's the 30th anniversary of her third studio album True Blue.
Things took a slightly different turn on this album for Madonna, incorporating classical music into the grooves plus instrumentation from acoustic guitars, synthesisers, live drums and Cuban beats. Critics praised her stronger singing voice and skills as a songwriter and producer.
The first single from True Blue was the haunting ballad 'Live To Tell'. It featured on the soundtrack to then husband Sean Penn's critically acclaimed crime drama, At Close Range. Live To Tell was Madonna's third number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
True Blue was the world's biggest selling album of 1986 as well as the best selling album of the 80's by a female artist. The album contained 3 Number 1 singles including 'Open Your Heart'. In the song's music video Madonna played an exotic dancer in a peep show who befriends a young boy enabling her escape. It was criticized for having a child inside a strip club but it's depiction of innocence over sexual heat was considered a moral victory. The music video was an homage to two of Madonna's idols, Liza Minelli and Marlene Dietrich.
La Isla Bonita (translate: The Beautiful Island) was True Blue's fourth and final single. It was Madonna's first song to include Spanish lyrics and was dedicated to the 'beauty and mystery of the people of Latin America'.
True Blue was the first Madonna album to include lyrics with a social conscience …most notably it's second single concerning teenage pregnancy, Papa Don't Preach. In the song's music video Madonna swapped her heavy jewellery and make up for the gamine look of French actress Jean Seberg in the classic 60's film Breathless. She also wore a slogan T shirt with the caption 'Italians Do It Better'.
Happy 58th Birthday to Madonna this Tuesday August 16.
