Australian Idol Contestant Dead At 36
Kate Cook, who got our attention after appearing on Australian Idol in 2009, has died.
The 36-year-old country singer’s body was found in bushland by police on Monday morning, after friends became concerned over her whereabouts.
Cook won our hearts when the then-abattoir worker from Queensland auditioned for the show.
During her audition, Kate told the judges that her biggest influence had been her mum, who had suicided a decade before, when Kate was just 16.
"Two days before I turned 17 my younger sister and I found her. She committed suicide, so it was pretty tough," she told Marcia Hines, Kyle Sandilands and Ian Dickson. "I've had a long road to sort of find myself after being lost for a long time. So I sort found myself through strength and music."
This is the Kate Cook I remember and loved. We were only just talking about organising a ten year Idol reunion this year... you were such a beautiful person inside & out. Absolutely gutted but hope you’re up there with your Mum now 💔😪 pic.twitter.com/CPvjz0khIK— CASEY BARNES (@Casey_Barnes) March 4, 2019
Her audition song was an original piece dedicated to her mum. It was released independently in 2010.
She placed sixth in the season that was eventually won by Stan Walker.
After Idol, Kate did the pubs and clubs circuit, but had admitted it was tough to keep the momentum going after the show.
Her death isn’t being treated as suspicious.
